Born in Portales, New Mexico, Scott is the youngest of two sons born to Larry and Cindi Fuqua. Raised in a typical small-town neighborhood, Scott enjoyed playing baseball. Though his peak as a baseball player came near the age of 12, it was quite a peak, including a 6-inning game in which he struck out 13 opposing hitters.
Scott graduated from Portales High School in 1993 and from Eastern New Mexico University in 1997. After college, Scott attended law school at the University of Chicago, graduating in 2001. He spent the next year clerking for Justice Pamela B. Minzner on the New Mexico Supreme Court and then moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked in the litigation section of the Houston-based law firm Vinson & Elkins, LLP.
In 2007, Scott left private practice and returned home to raise a family of his own and dedicate his education and experience to serving New Mexico. He joined the New Mexico Attorney General's Office, where Gary King promoted him from staff attorney to Director of Litigation for the entire state.
Scott is married to Miranda Katko Fuqua. They have three sons, Tyler, Adam, and Thomas. They have lived in Santa Fe since 2007.
